This course is designed to enhance students’ essay writing skills with emphasis on critical analysis of
narrative, descriptive, expository, and argumentative essays. Through research, students will further
practice essay skills and produce a research essay on a topic of their choice. This course also introduces
students to interpretive literature and the analysis and interpretation of elements of fiction and poetic
devices found in literary works.

EN 108 is a College English course which is mandatory for all students registered in the Associate of Arts in Primary Teacher Education. It is a pre-requisite course for EN209. This course aims at strengthening students’ writing, analytical and instructional skills in the formal, technical and scientific discourses of exposition and argumentation, thus, sharpening students’ skills in APA documentation and abilities to prepare a debate. It allows the student-teacher to plan and execute presentations and mini-lessons, in these formal types of discourses, for an elementary school context. The focus is on developing the skills to effectively use the process of writing to prepare and analyze formal discourses. It teaches student-teachers to practice the process of writing and analysis of topic, thesis statements, style, audience, patterns of organization, and strategies/techniques of formal prose. In addition, it teaches the student-teacher the importance and practice of writing first drafts and proofreading to improve writing skills.

EN 107 is a general core English course which is mandatory for all students registering for the Associate Degree at Corozal Junior College. This course aims at strengthening students’ writing skills for narrative, descriptive, expository and argumentative writing. The focus is on the process of writing such as planning (selecting a topic, writing effective thesis statements, finding a style suitable to a particular audience), organizing ideas in outlines, writing first drafts, editing, and rewriting to produce acceptable essays. Furthermore, argumentative writing skills will be reinforced through in-class debates, which require in-depth research techniques and the use of APA formatting when presenting essays.

EN 255 aims to enhance the student’s Business Communication Skills by emphasizing the use of mechanics in English and adequate protocols in Business Communications. It also prepares the student wholly, emotionally, academically, and socially for the Business World. This integrative course is designed to simultaneously improve both the oral and written communication skills necessary to embrace a world in which management is inseparable from communication and in which business directly or indirectly affects every individual.

The course provides ample reading, writing and speaking opportunities in Standard English for the student to be able to improve in both written and spoken communication. It emphasizes the wider framework of communication principles, systems, forms and processes within which language use has context, achieves coherence and is enhanced. It focuses specifically on the appreciation of the linguistic complexity and diversity of the Caribbean and the implications of this diversity for social, cultural and economic transactions.
